SPOTLIGHT on EQUAL PAY

Who? Law at Work

What? Hollywood A-listers are shouting about it – Jennifer Lawrence recently joined a long list of actors including Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson, Patricia Arquette, Cate Blanchett and Rose McGowan who have spoken up about the misogyny in the entertainment industry. But it is not just the glitz and glamour of Hollywood that is being tarnished. It seems that the gender pay gap is firmly on the news agenda.

Equal pay litigation has affected the public sector for over a decade, however, the private sector, generally speaking, managed to stay under the radar. That has changed over the last couple of years with mass equal pay claims being raised against supermarkets and banks. Equal pay is an issue that all employers – public, private, small and large – need to have at the forefront of their minds. The Government’s new gender pay gap reporting obligations may only apply to large employers, but the publicity surrounding them will get employees thinking about their own situations.

It is rare for employers to set out to deliberately discriminate against one gender when it comes to pay, however, disparities in pay can develop over time for a number of different reasons. It’s important to be alert to any potential exposures in your workforce. LAW has had an influx of requests for help with pay audits, job evaluation schemes and pay structures so they’d like to share their experiences and tips with you.

At this half-day workshop, LAW will help you understand the different types of equal pay claims, where employers tend to be exposed and what can be done to limit the risk of claims. LAW will also discuss the impact of the Government’s new gender pay gap reporting obligations. Equal pay litigation can be complicated, long-running and hugely costly. Take steps to make sure your organisation isn’t the next to face an influx of claims.
