He was there for the launch of Step Up To Serve, the Campaign for Youth Social Action – an initiative which hopes to double the number of young people participating in social action to 50% by 2020.
Peter also tweeted about his involvement in #CIPD13, the CIPD’s centenary conference, where he gave the opening keynote speech. On Twitter, Peter praised participants for “lots of energy, engagement, & confidence in our future. Can we do it, yes we can!” If that last line sounds familiar, you’re probably a fan of one of Peter’s own heroes, Bob the Builder.

Peter’s conference speech touched on many of the key issues affecting HR right now and in the months ahead, saying the conference gave a taste of the way HR will go in the future. He highlighted that social media was crucial to the conversation (including the live streamed events at the conference), and reiterated his intention to make HR have a louder voice, stating that “there’s never been a more interesting or more important time to be in HR”.
In his speech, Peter underlined on the importance of getting young people interested in HR, as well as talking about HR for SMEs, the value of not just engaging audience, but having two way conversations with them, being relevant internationally, and significant contextual shifts in terms of work, employees and HR.
Peter used his speech to talk about HR in a wider perspective, the need for clearer communication within businesses and to announce that the CIPD is partnering with other agencies to “develop a framework for human capital measurement”.
He also reminded us that HR is ultimately about people and the importance of getting back to the foundations of what HR is really about, while also adding value to that with modern scientific insights – to develop HR that engages and motivates people in positive environments and builds HR models for the future.
